Background of the Study
Infant sleep practices play a crucial role in reducing the risk of sleep-related infant deaths, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and accidental suffocation (Adedeji & Olanrewaju, 2023). Safe sleep guidelines emphasize placing infants on their backs to sleep, using a firm sleep surface, and avoiding soft bedding and overheating (Adeyemi & Adeola, 2024). Despite the well-established evidence supporting safe infant sleep practices, many parents and caregivers continue to practice unsafe sleep practices, leading to preventable infant deaths. Nurses, as key healthcare providers in maternity and pediatric settings, have a vital role in educating parents and caregivers about safe infant sleep practices (Okechukwu & Rasaq, 2023).
At Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWUSTH), nurses are frequently involved in educating new parents about infant care, including sleep practices. However, there is limited research on the awareness and implementation of safe sleep practices by nurses in Nigerian hospitals. Nurses' knowledge and their ability to effectively educate parents can significantly influence infant sleep outcomes and reduce sleep-related infant deaths. This study seeks to assess the level of awareness and the implementation of safe infant sleep practices among nurses at Kwara State University Teaching Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
Unsafe infant sleep practices continue to be a significant contributor to infant mortality in Nigeria. Nurses have a crucial role in educating parents about safe sleep practices to prevent these deaths. However, there is little understanding of the level of awareness and the implementation of these practices by nurses at Kwara State University Teaching Hospital. Identifying gaps in nurses' knowledge and the factors influencing their ability to educate parents about safe sleep is essential to improving infant health outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of awareness of safe infant sleep practices among nurses at Kwara State University Teaching Hospital.
To evaluate the implementation of safe infant sleep practices by nurses at KWUSTH.
To identify factors that influence nurses’ ability to educate parents about safe infant sleep practices.
Research Questions
What is the level of awareness of safe infant sleep practices among nurses at Kwara State University Teaching Hospital?
How do nurses at KWUSTH implement safe infant sleep practices in their care for infants?
What challenges do nurses face in educating parents about safe infant sleep practices?
Research Hypotheses
There is a significant relationship between nurses' awareness of safe infant sleep practices and their implementation of these practices.
Nurses with more years of experience in maternal and child health are more likely to adhere to safe infant sleep practices than those with less experience.
Inadequate training and resources significantly hinder nurses' ability to educate parents about safe infant sleep practices.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the maternity and pediatric units at Kwara State University Teaching Hospital. The study will assess their awareness and implementation of safe infant sleep practices and explore factors affecting their education of parents. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting and the study’s limited applicability to other institutions with different resources and training.
